  • 75% of Millennials and Gen Z say it feels like a reward when they book travel with credit card points (compared to 62% of Gen X and Baby Boomers).
  • 60% of global respondents plan to book a trip around entertainment events or plan on taking at least one trip for a sporting event in 2025. 
  • 59% of global respondents plan on taking 1-3 international trips in 2025 and 74% of global respondents plan on taking 1-3 domestic trips in 2025.

Tourism Ireland conducted research with RED C amongst potential holidaymakers (+8000) in eight key tourism markets – Great Britain, United States, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Canada and Australia to understand their current views regarding international travel and what would compel them to choose the island of Ireland for a holiday.  They found that: 

  • 7/10 are interested in visiting Ireland some time, with 3/10 actively planning. 
  • Those considering Ireland for a holiday are also likely to consider Scotland, Iceland, Norway and England as options.
  • Reasons visitors choose Ireland are because of the scenery (33%), culture (11%), sightseeing (9%), history (7%) and visiting friends and relatives (6%).
  • Barriers to visiting Ireland include competition/other places to go (16%), weather (13%), cost (6%), access/difficulty getting here (5%).
  • Value for money is important. Overall, half of overseas holidaymakers think Ireland represents good value for money, in line with Scotland and ahead of Nordic markets. However, this is not the same across all markets. 1/3 of holidaymakers seeking to reduce costs would consider shortening their stay.

  • European travellers are looking to forge deeper connections when they travel. 
  • 40% of respondents say rest and relaxation is the most important thing about a holiday for them.  
  • Cost is still the single biggest factor influencing where people choose to go on holiday.
  • While Europe will continue to dominate as a destination for European travellers this year, the survey suggests that  Europeans will venture further afield next year.

  • The forecast is strong for leisure travel in 2025, with 81% of consumers planning to go on more, or the same amount of
    holidays as they did in 2024.
  • Out of these 42% of consumers plan to go on more holidays compared to 2024, with 39% planning to go on the same amount.
  • On average, consumers typically book their holidays 3.6 months in advance. However, this increases to as much as 4.9 months in the UK and 4.6 months in Germany, and falls as low as 1.9 months in Saudi Arabia.

Insights from ABTA’s Holiday Habits 2024-2025 research of UK Consumers reveals where people go for information and inspiration when planning and researching their holidays:

  • the top choice is a general internet search (49%), followed by recommendations from family and friends (39%), travel websites and newsletters or guidebooks (36%). 
  • One in five people (21%) use social media platforms for their inspiration, the most popular option at 44% for 25-34 year olds and 42% of 18-24-year-olds.
  • Of those who had been on a holiday booked through a travel operator, 37% said they get their inspiration from travel agents and tour operators, the same proportion as friends and family (37%).
  • 68% of consumers saying they only trust companies that are members of ABTA.
