Since they began working with Slieve Elva they have: 

  • reduced energy use by 64.7% and saved €5000 
  • reduced waste going to landfill by 71.4% and saved €1000

Mabrian Research: Europe could save CO2 emissions by switching domestic flights for rail | Sustainability | Scoop.it

This study was carried out to find the impact of replacing domestic air routes of less than two and a half hours, and a maximum of 500km, with high speed trains in EuropE.

Some of the findings include: 

  • Potential replacement of over 550 domestic air routes of 500km or less with more efficient high-speed trains. 
  • CO2 savings and reduced pollution over short distances carrying 44 million passengers this year.
  • Spain, Germany, and France are the countries with the greatest opportunity for CO2 emissions savings in Europe.
  • 1 million tonnes of C02 is a 48% reduction and the equivalent of 200,000 cars running continuously for one whole year.

The badge is applicable to a wide range of accommodation types, from apartments, B&Bs, holiday homes, hotels and resorts.

 

The goal of the badge is to provide travellers with a transparent, consistent and easy-to-understand way to identify a wider range of more sustainable accommodation, no matter where they travel.

The Covenant of Companies is a European Commission programme designed to support European companies in particular, small and medium size in reducing their energy bills by
decarbonising their processes, products and services.

 

In making a pledge with the programme, companies commit to take action to decarbonise.  If return, they will receive support in the form of online tools and one-to-one technical assistance to help achieve their target.

 

Companies taking one or more measures to decarbonise will be rewarded with a Bronze, Silver or Gold Seal, depending on the extent of their efforts and investment.

Booking.com's  new research reveals that:

  • 64% of UK travellers say they want to travel more sustainably over the coming 12 months, while 74% say the global energy crisis and rising cost of living is impacting their spending plans
  • Three fifths (60%) of UK travellers believe more sustainable travel options are too expensive, in contrast to 36% willing to pay extra for travel options with a sustainable certification
  • 56% of British travellers now turn off the air conditioning in their accommodation when they aren't there  & 70% re-use the same towel multiple times (up 36% from 2022)
  • 500,000+ accommodations globally are being recognised with a Travel Sustainable badge on Booking.com

 

Insights were gathered from more than 33,000 travellers across 35 countries and territories.

There ethos is  that hotels of the future have a responsibility to the host city to minimise the environmental and social impacts of their guests. 

 

This one of the first-of-its-kind hotel in Europe. The building burns no fossil fuels, has zero local pollution and even improves the air quality around it.”
