Transport Environment: Down to Earth Report

Transport Environment: Down to Earth Report | Sustainability | Scoop.it

This report reviews emission levels and projected levels of passenger traffic by the aviation sector.  It claims that:

  • Current air traffic growth projections by the aviation industry will counteract most of the efforts to reduce its emissions.
  • As the sector plans to double its passenger traffic between 2019 and 2050, this rapid growth raises serious concerns about the sectors rising energy demands and its climate impact.
  • Despite efficiency improvements, aircraft departing from EU airports will burn 59% more fuel in 2050 than in 2019 as traffic levels increase.
  • Even though the sector will increase it's use of sustainable aviation fuels (enough to fulfill the EU's SAF mandate) in 2049, they could be burning as much fossil kerosene as in 2023.
  • Emissions of European aviation will decrease by less than 3% by 2049 compared to 2019 due to this explosion of growth.

The Travel Foundation: A Guide to Sustainable Practice for Tourism Businesses

The Travel Foundation: A Guide to Sustainable Practice for Tourism Businesses | Sustainability | Scoop.it

There are different ways to approach sustainability. Some tourism businesses establish programmes such as green champions, volunteering networks and using greener products.  These are great initiatives which can generate benefits for the business in terms of staff and customer engagement.

This guide goes further and recommends embedding sustainability throughout a tourism business.  It acknowledges embedding real and lasting change can be a long and difficult process.

Many businesses make sustainability an ‘add-on’ to the day to day business, when they should make it a core part of their business strategy.  Sustainability practices and
procedures need to be integrated throughout the business and along the value chain, from the very top of the business.

  • the need to consider equity and fairness, recognising that some destinations are more ready for the scenario than others; and
  • slowing the expected rapid growth in aviation, with limits on the number of long-haul flights.
