Overall planned capacity to the Republic of Ireland (ROI) for the first half of 2024 is expected to be 4% above the same period last year.

  • Mainland Europe, North America and Rest of World markets are set to increase their seat capacity to ROI between January and June 2024 compared to 2023.
  • Capacity from Great Britain is due to be 2% below the same period last year.
  • Seat capacity is expected to be up at all airports, except Kerry airport, for the first half of this year.
  • Planned capacity from North America is due to surpass its 2019 levels for the first time since the pandemic (+8% vs. Q1 & Q2 2019).

The Occupancy survey for Q3 2023 found that occupancy levels remain higher or similar to 2022 in every sector. 

  • Guesthouse room occupancy in Q3 2023 (83%) was similar to Q3 2022 (82%)
  • B&B room occupancy (74%) in Q3 2023 was higher than in Q3 2022 (66%) – but many B&Bs have remained closed, so net occupancy comparisons should be viewed with caution
  • Self-catering unit occupancy in Q3 was 77% – similar to Q3 last year (78%); 
  • Hostel bed occupancy (75%) in Q3 was also similar to Q3 last year (72%) 
  • Caravan & camping pitch occupancy in Q3 was 69% – slightly higher than Q3 2022 (65%); further growth could have been impacted by the poor summer weather. 
  • International visitors occupied the majority of the bed spaces in Q3 in every sector except for caravan & camping.

Key findings from the Hotel Survey for December:

  • Room occupancy dropped to 60.7% (71.2% in November).
  • Bedspace demand also fell from the previous month but increased compared to last year, indicating continuing leisure travel. 
  • Despite lower demand levels, ADR increased nationally to €158.75 compared to €142.76 in November this was also observed at county level.  
  • RevPAR was more muted with levels down compared to
    November and unchanged when compared to last year.
  • The biggest proportion of hotel guests in December came from the  Republic of Ireland, increasing from 68.2% in November to 70.5% in December
