In the Q4 2023 report:
- European Tourism draws closer to pre pandemic levels with tourist arrivals to Europe -1.6% below 2019 in Q4 2023 as a result of strong intra-European travel, primarily from Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
- Long-haul arrivals also rebounded but at a slower pace and there are significant variations between regions e.g Asia Pacific and North America.
- Inflationary pressures did not deter travellers despite increases in costs across aviation and accommodation sectors
- Chinese arrivals to Europe recovered moderately reaching 67% below 2019 levels. Capacity bottlenecks & passport and visa issues impacted but Chinese travellers have also remained risk-averse favouring domestic travel. It is predicted that arrivals to Europe from this market will further rebound in 2024 reaching 39% below 2019 figures.
